Students of History at Concordia (SHAC)

CASE is SHACking up once again! As many of you know our dinner with them was a huge success and we thought lets end the year with another successful event with our fellow English Literature friends!

It will be at the Cock N’ Bull like our last pub night that everyone enjoyed so much. Be there and come say hi!
Bring your best drinking pants and shoes because there is a lot of beer to go around! There are 175 bracelets to go around and it is first come first serve! If you want to wear one of these glorious bracelets you should try to come as early as possible and once you have your bracelet you get to go to any of the three tap tables and have one of our presidents/VPs serve you the beers on tap for the evening!

THIS IS A FREE EVENT. If you show up, are in English or History, and there’s still room left, you get to drink fo’ free!

So come out and have some fun with your fellow classmates! We want to spoil you before our term runs out May 1!

For our third edition to our speaker series, we had a visiting Fellow Tania Martin give a lecture on historical architecture .

The poster says it all!

Hey guys!

Sorry for the long delay in posting the results. I was having a hard time posting things on here before.

Anyways, they are here now.

RESULTS OF VOTE REGARDING A RENEWABLE WEEK LONG STRIKE MANDATE:

Whereas the Concordia Student Union has passed the motion for a 5 day strike starting Thursday, March 15th 2012 until March 22nd during the March 7th, 2012, General Assembly.

2) Whereas SHAC has hosted a Special General Assembly taking place on Thursday March 15th, 2012 open to all registered full-time and part-time undergraduate students in the History department.

3) Be it resolved that the History Undergraduate Students support a strike that shall take place from March 15th 2012 until March 22nd 2012.

4) Be it further resolved that SHAC hold a second General Assembly to decide whether or not to extend the strike by an additional week.
5) Be it further resolved that there will be a ‘soft’ picket line, where students and teachers will not face aggression, violence, or harassment trying to access their classrooms

6) Be it further resolved that students are encouraged to continue attending extra-curricular activities and events on campus, and recognize that these extracurriculars or student-run events should not be hurt in the event of a strike

7) Be it further resolved that to choose to ‘strike’ means to not attend all of your classes—not some classes, or select classes one week and others the next, or being late for class

21 students voted in favor of going on strike for a week
40 students were opposed to going on strike
1 person abstained from voting.

Motion fails

RESULTS OF VOTE REGARDING HISTORY STUDENTS STANCE ON TUITION HIKES:

Whereas a gradual increase of $325 per year over a 5 year period which will result in an increase of $1625 has been announced by Quebec Ministry of Education

Whereas the tuition hike represents a 75% increase in our annual tuition fees

Be it Further Resolved that History Undergraduates oppose these tuition hikes

Results:
30 in favor

12 opposed

16 abstentions

Motion passes

Therefore, History Undergraduate Students are not participating in the week long strike from March 15th – 22nd. If you’re a History student this essentially means that none of your classes should be blocked by picket lines. If you do encounter students blocking your classes please email shac@asfa.ca to inform us of this.

A special thanks to all the History students that demonstrated their democratic will today and showed up to discuss the tuition hikes and vote on the strike. Thank you for your patience and above all thank you for respecting the differences in opinion you may have with your fellow classmates.

SHAC will be holding a SGA this Thursday, March 15th at 3pm on the 10th floor of the LB building and voting will take place to see if the History department will pass their own strike mandate during the strike period of March 15th to the 22nd. A vote will take place at the assembly in regards to what voting method will be used.

The details are as follows:

Special General Assembly Event Description:

LB Building 10th floor: LB-1014.1
Hello Concordia History undergraduates,Your Member Association that represents you at the Department level, Students of History of Concordia, requests your presence at our 1st Special General Assembly of the year next Thursday, March 15th at 3:00pm.

WHY IS THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY NOW SCHEDULED AT 3PM IN LB 1014.1 ( LB BUILDING 10th FLOOR) ?

We require ten days in advance to book the CSU 7th floor space. Unfortunately, the ECA (Engineering & Computer Science Student Association) booked the 7th floor Lounge on March 15th for the entire afternoon. Luckily, the History Department has accommodated us and has provided a room for us on the 10th floor of the LB Building in LB 1014.1. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience in changing the location and time slightly, in this way we have the 10th floor guaranteed to us and have even been given permission to use the History 10th floor common space in the event that a larger than anticipated amount of students decide to show up to voice their opinions on tuition hikes. Thank you for your understanding and patience regarding this matter.

WHY HAVE A GENERAL ASSEMBLY?

Because as your Department Association we are responsible for providing History undergraduates with information regarding the impending tuition hikes and the impact it may have upon some students in terms of continuing their Post-Secondary Education. Moreover, a petition was created by some History undergraduates asking the SHAC Executive to hold a General Assembly. In the interests of democracy and fostering a healthy debate on this matter, we would like to give History students the opportunity to express their views on the tuition & ancillary fee hikes as well as decide upon an individual strike mandate that we suggest should coindide with the CSU University-wide mandate that begins March 15th – 22nd.

I THOUGHT THE CSU IS ALREADY ON STRIKE?
All undergraduate students are technically on strike as of March 15th until March 22nd and will be given the opportunity on March 22nd to decide whether or not to extend the strike by an additional week or however much longer Concordia undergraduates want to be on strike. Some things to know, the original wording of the motion that was proposed by the CSU was changed at the General Assembly this evening to include a clause that was altered slightly to include a motion that essentially prevents people from forming picket lines to barricade teachers & students from entering school property.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO VOTE, BY HAND OR BY BALLOT?

We have witnessed a great amount of dissatisfaction amongst some students that disagree with the practice of voting by hand as opposed to voting by “secret ballot.” We intend to have a point on the agenda to give students the opportunity to vote on whether or not the vote for the History Department to go on strike for a week is by a show of hands or by secret ballot.

As Executives of SHAC, we are not given votes at General Assemblies and therefore, we do not believe it should be us that decides the voting procedure. It is you that shall decide that, so please decide to show up for the vote! No one should feel that they will be intimidated for their views on tuition increases and we wish to make it blatantly clear that name calling and inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated, thus creating a safe environment for discussion.

WHAT DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN A GENERAL ASSEMBLY?

All we need is your Concordia student ID. If you have lost your ID, we will accept any other photo ID accompanied with your student ID # or a printed copy of your transcript for admittance. If you possess none of these IDs, there is unfortunately no way for us to verify your identity and you will not be allowed to participate in the General Assembly.

HOW DOES A STRIKE WORK, WILL MY CLASSES BE CANCELLED?

CUPFA, the Concordia University Part-Time Faculty Association has released the following directives to Concordia teachers who are still contractually bound to teach class as usual during the Strike.
http://www.cupfa.org/response-to-student-class-boycott/

Basically, they are allowed to cancel class at their own discretion if only a few or no students show up to class. If there is the usual amount of students or a full class of students after the first 15 minutes of class then they have to continue class on as usual. Faculty have been advised not to call security/cops if students refuse entry to them and their students so as to allow peaceful demonstrations to take place. So in other words, if there is nobody in class and you’re the only person in class after 15 minutes, your teacher has full discretion on whether or not to teach the class or decide to cancel it and post-pone it until later.

Any questions regarding the strike, the General Assembly? Please feel free to post them below or you can email: shac@asfa.ca

3) Whereas SHAC has hosted a Special General Assembly taking place on Thursday March 15th, 2012 open to all registered full-time and part-time undergraduate students in the History department.
