A Message from TAPthirst

Our concerns of the impacts of individually packaged water are widespread.
Some of the major concerns are as follows:

Producing bottled water
• The two primary raw materials in polyethylene terphtalate (PET) are toxic chemicals that are derived from crude oil and that contribute to acid rain.
• There are rising concerns about the environmental impacts of heavy industrial water withdrawals.
• Twice as much water is used in production than what is sold in the bottle (Pacific Institute estimate).

Transportation
• The bottled water industry relies on container ships, trucks and cars to transport raw materials to the plants and finished products to where they are sold. Oil based transportation contributes to global warming through the production of greenhouse gases.

Plastic waste
• Current data from the post consumer recyclers shows that only 24% of the 4 billion kilograms of resin sold for plastic bottle production in 2006 was recovered by recycling programs in the USA.

Costs
• Based on Montréal municipal water prices and the average cost to buy a 12 pack of bottled water; you are paying $750 for the same amount of water that cost the bottler $1.38.
